The Psychology of group hate
This is an entry I made early last year (Around February May 2021)
I am fascinated by accumulated unilateral dislike for a given people,by another party. It's interesting,So what I want to start with is to explain the meaning or at least my understanding of group hate, then try deciphering the psychologically motivated source, then maybe a first principles solution to the problem of group hate.
When a child is born, they are born without any bias or dislike for people they've never met,so at least we can conclude that group hate is an acquired human habit.
(i) My understanding of group hate:
Group hate has many forms, from racism , discrimination, political differences …etc there seems to be a common thread… the source at a very fundamental level is the inherent sin of Adam, simple and straight. But at a more group and face level, there's the idea of identity. All focal points of hate are based on a difference in identity, thus ideology. Hate happens, when we exchange offense, and this exchange of offense can only be arrived at if there is a well enough capacity of identity to tie the hate to so:
People's circles of identity carry heavy capabilities for offense, because attacking ones identity is threatening change, something that the human mind in its fallen state is very much averse to. So for instance,I tell someone that they are stupid, or intellectually dwarfed-if you want to be fancy, this might have different effects:
A person who prides themselves or identifies themselves with their 'intellectual capacity' will take offense to that to the core, on the other hand, one who doesn't identify themselves with the same, will not count it as much. So I will hate you for attacking a part of 'my' identity that makes me feel safe. Hate is an attack on identity with the intent of pushing for conformity…
So for political sides hating each other, churches clashing, among many other forms of hate can be described or broken down into identity.
(ii) Solution to group hate:
The solution to group hate is a simple bug fix by the creator of your source code. That is the ultimate end all be all solution, period. But other than that, abstractly thinking, and employing a bit of Greek philosophy (which is severely flawed) , we can have a band aid plastic solution that would stem from us reevaluating and reconstructing how we form identities and how we react when our identities are attacked.
a) One of such methods is what the Buddhist have been pushing for generations:
Simple and straightforward - reduce the size of your identity (or circle or ego or pride) to a size where very few things offend you, this saves an individual from hate ,but the case may not be the same for large chunks of people…
(p.s.a : This is article is complete in an incomplete way, and is that the beauty of life - that broken things can still be beautiful. But I'll finish it someday)
